He received his PhD from Kyushu University in 1995 under the direction of Prof. Ken Kanematsu. In 1995-1997, he carried out post-doctoral research at Prof. Mitsuhiko Shionoya’s group (the Institute for Molecular Science, Okazaki, Japan). In 1997–2001, he jointed Medicinal Research Laboratories, Takeda Chemical Industries. In 2001, he jointed Prof. Itaru Hamachi’s group as an assistant professor of Kyushu University. He moved to Kyoto University with Prof. Hamachi as an assistant professor in 2005, and then was promoted to a lecturer of Kyoto University in 2007. In 2010, he was promoted to a full professor of Kyushu University. His research interests focus on chemical biology, medicinal chemistry, and organic chemistry.
