About Pink Dot Okinawa
Simply put, Pink Dot Okinawa is about publicly expressing the right
of LGBT people to live freely, openly, and comfortably in society.
Supporters gather and dress in pink to show their support for the
freedom to love.
*LGBT refers to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender individuals.
Pink Dot first began in Singapore in 2009. For the Singaporeans, pink was chosen as it
represented the mixture of the red and white of the national flag; together, it symbolized
the idea of togetherness and harmony within society as a whole. For us at Pink Dot
Okinawa, we think of the color pink as a symbol of peace and love-a color that embraces
and bonds people together.
Since its inception in 2009, Pink Dot has spread all over the world from Utah to Montreal
and continues to gain widespread support amongst LGBT individuals and their allies. This
year’s event in Hong Kong drew over 11,000 participants, while in Singapore, over 30,000
people attended.
Last year, Pink Dot Okinawa (notably, the first Pink Dot event in Japan) drew over 800
participants to its main stage event and over 2,000 people to its side events. While we’re
dwarfed in size compared to Pink Dots and Pride Parades hosted overseas, we’re proud to
be the largest LGBT event in Japan outside of major urban areas like Tokyo and Osaka.
Coverage of our event can be found on local, national, and overseas media outlets, making
Pink Dot Okinawa a truly global event. With our worldwide connections in mind, we want
to do our best to make life for LGBT people both within and without Okinawa as
comfortable and amazing as possible. Come join us in all the fun!

About the Homecoming Wedding
This year’s Pink Dot Okinawa features a homecoming wedding ceremony for a gay couple from Canada.
Though they have been legally married in Canada for several years now, Okinawa native Kazuki Kinjo
and his American partner Harold Chaput have yet to celebrate their partnership in Japan. As a result,
we’d like to take the opportunity to celebrate their love and devotion with a special ceremony.
As you may know, as of yet no legal protections for same-sex couples exist in Japan today. That said, the
number of same-sex couples who are throwing weddings like their straight counterparts continues to
increase day by day. However, many LGBT people in smaller towns and cities feel that it’s “totally
impossible” to do the same sort of public ceremony without the relative anonymity afforded by large
cities like Tokyo or Osaka. It’s exactly for this reason that we’re holding an event for Harold and Kazuki
in Okinawa-a place where familial ties are extremely strong, and traditional attitudes still hold sway.
This ceremony was first proposed by the Pink Dot Executive and was later approved by Harold and
Kazuki in the spirit of making a better world for LGBT people. This event, however, could not have been
possible without the financial support of more than 100 donators who gave generously to our
crowdfunding campaign at https://readyfor.jp/projects/pinkdotok. Words cannot express how
grateful we are to all who have expressed their support for our brave and happy couple.
It is our sincerest wish that this public ceremony will have a powerful impact in Okinawa and beyond.
For those who currently live with a same-sex partner--or those who wish to do so in the future--we
hope that this homecoming wedding will give you a glimpse of hope and happiness in the fight for
equal rights.
