Hakuba Tourism was established in 2006 by hotels in
the Happo and Wadano areas of Hakuba, in concert with
the Japanese government’s “Visit Japan” campaign.
Since then, Hakuba Tourism has engaged in a variety of
activities to introduce travelers around the world to the
beautiful resort area of Hakuba.
In addition to PR activities, Hakuba Tourism is dedicated
to helping visitors get the most out of their vacation
through a variety of events and services. One such
activity is the “Genki-Go” shuttle bus that runs during the
winter season. In conjunction with Hakuba Village and
the Hakuba Tourist Bureau, Hakuba Tourism provides this
convenient bus service so that visitors can easily travel
around the vast Hakuba Valley.

■ 銀行と両替　Banking and Money
Credit card cash advances and travelers check exchange are
available at Hachijuni Bank & Nagano Bank near Hakuba Station
(banking hours 9am – 3pm). Cash withdrawals from ATM
machines using overseas bank cards are available at the
Hakuba Post Office (weekdays 8:45 – 7pm; weekends and
holidays 9am – 5pm; closed during the New Years holidays).
7-Eleven Bank ATM machines accept international credit
cards and debit cards such as Visa, Master, Amex, Plus,
Cirrus, Maestro, UnionPay and JCB. Hotels do not exchange
foreign currency or travelers checks for Japanese yen.

■ タクシー・バス・電車　Taxis, Buses and Trains
There are bus services to Nagano city from the Alpico Bus
Terminal, and buses to Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya from Alpico
Terminal and the Wadano Visitor Center. Taxis are available
until 1am. The cost is about 1,500 yen from Wadano to Hakuba
Station. Direct trains go to Matsumoto, Nagoya and Tokyo.

Japan has an excellent health care system that is comparable
to western standards, and many doctors speak some English.
In Hakuba, clinic hours are usually 8:30am – 12pm and 1:30pm
– 5:30pm. Most clinics are closed on weekends and holidays.
However, there is at least one doctor’s office on duty for
weekends and holidays. If you need medical assistance, please
check with the reception desk at your hotel.

International Phone and Internet Services
Public pay phones in Japan are categorized by color, and most
gray pay phones provide international telephone services. (Phone
booth locations are indicated on the map.) The gray phones are
digital, and a modular jack can be connected to your computer
for internet access. Prepaid international calling cards can be
used from any public or private phone. The calling cards can be
purchased from hotels or 7-Eleven. Make sure that you know the
Japan access number to use your card. Customers wishing to
connect to the internet with laptops or palmtops are recommended
to have an internet service provider to enable connection while
in Japan. Some hotels and restaurants offer Wi-Fi connections to
customers. The country code for Japan is +81.

■ 温泉　Japanese Onsen Hot Springs
A trip to the onsen, or hot springs, is a favorite outing in Japan,
especially during the cold winter months. The natural hot
springs water warms the body from the inside out, perfect after
a day outdoors. Many onsen also offer health benefits, and for
centuries, onsen in Japan have been used as a cure for physical
ailments.
How to Enjoy the Onsen Bath

Enter the bath slowly. If the onsen water
is hotter than you are accustomed to,
start by putting only your feet or lower
body into the bath.
After your body is used to the water
temperature, immerse your entire
body.
To prevent dizziness, do not stay in
the bath for long periods of time.
Be sure to drink plenty of water or
tea after you get out of the onsen to
prevent dehydration.

1) Insert both arms into the sleeves of the yukata.
2) Close the front of the yukata so that the left side is on top.
3) Wrap the obi (sash) twice around your waist, tie it, and you are done!

restaurant, introduced in several English guidebooks, has an

"Ohyokkuri" is the nickname for country-style hot pot meals,
a local favorite during the cold winter months. Our specialty
hot pot dishes are made with local meats and also include
dumplings made with local flour. This home-style cooking is

Join us at Shirouma-so for fantastic food and a bit of Japanese culture!
You can choose from one of two Japanese favorites, sukiyaki or shabushabu (hot pot) at this traditional Japanese inn. We have adult and childsized kimono jackets for guests to wear during dinner.
Join us for Japanese sake tasting (Sun/Tues/Thurs/Fri) or an
introduction to Japanese culture (Mon). At the sake tasting event, you
can try six types of sake from our selection of 20 brands of local sake.
The sake cup is yours to keep as a gift. At the cultural evening, you
can experience a taiko drumming performance, rice cake pounding,
