FROM THE
EXECUTIVE
DIRECTOR
The Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre has been a hive of
activity over the past seven months. As we move into the second half
of 2014, we are planning for a great fall with an exciting line-up of
cultural programs. On any given day, you can wander through our
centre and experience the delicious aromas of cooking classes, the
captivating sights of dancing, and the energy of children practicing
martial arts.
Stop by our museum this summer to enjoy Steven Nunoda’s
GHOSTOWN exhibit – both educational and intriguing in its unique
presentation and experiential interaction. In the fall, we are proud to
present Kip Fulbeck: part asian, 100% hapa, a fascinating showcase of
the mixed ethnicities within our community.
As summer starts to cool down, the excitement at NNMCC will
just be heating up. Building on last year's overwhelming success,
our spectacular summer festival, Nikkei Matsuri: The Heart of Nikkei, will be returning
on August 30 & 31, 2014. With more food variety, enhanced entertainment, a full menu
of children's games and activities, and the ever-popular Nikkei's Got Talent contest, this
year’s festival will ensure that a celebration of Japanese Culture is on full display in the
heart of Metro Vancouver.
Lastly, all of our programs, events, and exhibits are largely dependent on community
support. If you have signed up to be a member of our organization, we thank you, and if
you have not yet registered, we would sincerely appreciate your support. Sign up today to

Nikkei
Ghostown recalls and memorializes a pivotal
event in Steven Nunoda’s family history, the
internment of 22,000 persons of Japanese
descent during the Second World War.
Combining 200 miniature tarpaper models
with audio and video, the exhibit provides
a focus for community remembrance. The
work comments on immigrant experiences,
broader issues of human rights, displaced
populations and the effects of racism.

you?” Originally used as a derogatory label
derived from the Hawaiian word for “half,”
hapa is now a term of pride for many whose
mixed-race heritage includes Asian ancestry.

The Nikkei National Museum houses
and preserves extensive Japanese Canadian
collections – including artifacts, archives, historic
photographs, personal papers, and beautiful artworks. A
special thanks goes to several funding agencies that are

Centre at UBC, the Museums Assistance Program of Canadian

Japanese washi paper. The paper is torn by hand
into different shapes and sizes and glued onto
a canvas to form a picture. The resulting work

Nikkei Seniors Health Care and Housing Society News
It has been 12 years since Nikkei Home opened its doors, and New Sakura So 16 years.
Both buildings continue to house many seniors. In addition to housing and health care within
Nikkei Place, the Society offers a couple of popular outreach programs for the Nikkei seniors
in the community, which were introduced April, 2013. Iki Iki will run in Burnaby, as well as
Vancouver and Steveston starting September 2014.

IKI IKI Program – a fun and lively program
Kui Do Raku (Exercise, Eat and Socialize)
Iki Iki is a fun, enjoyable program for seniors with mild to moderate dementia, and those
seniors who would enjoy an easier paced program. The programs run weekly and include
activities like: exercise, chatting, lunch, art table, and games. Each program is led by a staff
leader and supported by compassionate and committed volunteers. Iki Iki is a partnership
of Nikkei Seniors Health Care and Housing Society, Tonari Gumi and Steveston Japanese
Canadian Cultural Centre. It is funded by the generous donations to Nikkei Seniors Health
Care and Housing Society and a grant from the Vancouver Foundation, and guidance from
the Centre for Aging, University of Victoria.
Keeping active and engaged is a wonderful way for seniors to stay healthy and independent.
Join this once-a-week program for a weekly health check; exercise and lecture. This program
is targeted to independent seniors and runs as a series. Registration is required.

映画『ハーフ』では、ハーフたちが現代日本で体
験する複雑な多文化を発見する旅に出ます。かつて
単一民族と言われてきた国において多文化・多人
種であるとはどういうことなのか、
５人のハーフの日々
を見つめます。上映後の討論会にもぜひご参加下

ゴーストタウン : スティーブン・ヌノダによる展示
6月14日（土）～8月31日（日）
「ゴーストタウン」展は、ヌノダ家にとって第二次世界大
戦時における日系人22,000人の強制収容という重大
な出来事を喚起させます。タール紙で作られた200個
のミニチュア仮設住宅模型に音と映像が重ねられた展
示は、日系コミュニティーに追悼の機会をもたらします。
この展示は移民体験や広い意味における人権、強制追
放者、そして人種差別の影響について物語ります。

あらゆる年齢と社会階層の人々を写したカラーポート
レートを通して、アーティストかつ映画監督のキップ・
フルベックが問いかける「Whatareyou?」。hapaと
いう言葉はもともとハワイ語のハーフに由来し軽蔑的
な表現として使われましたが、今ではアジア系の混血
人種が誇らしく使う表現です。写真に映し出される様
々なアイデンティティは今日の北米の現実を象徴して
います。

年に３回発行される日系プレースネットワークは
日系センターのプログラムガイドです。
日系文化センター・博物館では、今年もこれまでに数々の催しを行ってきました。そして2014年も後
半に差しかかり、秋に向けての様々なプログラムをさらに計画しております。日系センターへお越し頂
ければ、料理教室から漂う美味しそうな香りや、目を見張るようなダンスの躍動感、そして武道に励む
子供たちのいきいきとした姿を楽しんで頂けることでしょう。
この夏、博物館で開催中のスティーブン・ヌノダ氏による展示「ゴーストタウン」へ是非お立ち寄り下さ
い。そのユニークな演出に好奇心をそそられると同時に、ゴーストタウンについて新しく学べる展示に
なっております。さらに秋の展示は、キップ・フルベック氏による「part asian, 100% hapa」を予定し
ております。
「Hapa」というハワイ語でハーフを意味する言葉の通り、私たちのコミュニティーにおける
混合人種について、興味深く掘り下げます。
夏の暑さが落ち着くにつれて、日系センターの熱狂は最高潮に達します。昨年、大成功を収めた壮大
な夏のイベント、
「日系祭り：日系の心」が8月30・31日に再び開催されます。今年の日系祭りは、昨年
