Dear Colleagues
In the past decade, since the publication of the second edition of the
Bethesda Atlas in 2004, much experience has been gained with respect to
the use and impact of the Bethesda terminology for cervical cytology in
clinical practice. This includes progressive familiarity with morphology
on liquid-based preparations, and further insights into HPV biology. We
have also seen implementation of HPV vaccination, approval of HPV
primary screening, and updated screening and management guidelines for
cervical cancer.
This seems to be the right time to develop the third edition of the
Bethesda Atlas for cervical cytology. Since minimal changes are
anticipated to the reporting system as such, there will not be a
consensus meeting in association with this update. Therefore, we have
convened a task force comprised of a relatively small group of
cytopathologists and clinicians/epidemiologists in order to
expeditiously accomplish this task. Drs. Ritu Nayar and David Wilbur
will serve as the editors of the third edition of the atlas.
We invite your input into this process by reviewing and commenting on
the updates proposed by the working groups. Please follow the
instructions below to provide your input.
The public comment period will remain open until June 15th 2014.
