The United Kingdom of Great Britain is a collection of countries west of the main body of Europe.
Those countries include England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and and Wales. Of these countries
the most commonly associated with the U.K. is England, it is the home of the British Royal family,
and the financial center of the U.K., it is also the largest body of land within the U.K.
グレートブリテン連合王国というのは、ヨーロッパの西部にある国々の一群の名前です。この
国々は、イングランド、スコットランド、北アイルランドとウェールズを含んでいます。連合王
国と言えばイングランドがよく連想されます。イングランドは、英王室の故郷であり、連合王国
の金融の中心地でもあります。そして、連合王国の中で最も大きな面積を占めています。
England is a mostly green land, where roads and train tracks are lined with bushes and trees,
fields and farms. Dotted through these belts of green are large sprawling metropolises, each
reaching high into the sky and far toward their natural or enforced borders. There is an impression
of England (a false one) that the sun is obscured by clouds of smog, that grey is the only colour as
far as the eye can see. Visit London, sit on Primrose Hill overlooking the city, surrounded by tree’s
and long wild grasses, and watch the sun set purple and pink behind silver and blue sky scrapers
and beautiful cathedrals. Visit London and you will see that not only is the countryside dotted with
cities, but the cities are dotted with the countryside too.
イングランドには緑があふれています。道路や鉄道沿いに、茂み、木々、田んぼや農場が続いて
います。緑の合間には、空高く、そして境界線に向かって大都会が広がっています。イングラン
ドでは、太陽が煙霧に遮られ、目が届く場所はすべてグレー色という間違った印象を持っている
人が多いでしょう。ロンドンに来てみてください。ロンドン市を俯瞰するプリムローズ・ヒルに
座り、木々や高い野草に囲まれてみましょう。そして、聳え立っている銀色や青色の超高層ビル
や美しい聖堂の背景に、紫色やピンク色が重なった夕日をご覧下さい。ロンドンでは、田舎の中
に都市があれば、都市の中にも田舎があります。
Amongst the hustle and bustle of busy city living you will find sanctuary in the many Royal and
communal parks. Whether you want to escape the crowds outside Buckingham palace waiting for
the changing of the guard, or would like to see peacocks roaming freely with plumage on full
display, retreat to St James or Holland Park respectively and take a scenic stroll.
大都会の賑わいの中、多くの王立や公衆公園で、癒される聖域が見つかります。バッキンガム宮
殿の外で、守衛の交替を待っている人の群れを避けたい、あるいは、自由に歩き回りながら羽を
自慢気に見せようとしているクジャクを見たい時、聖ジェームズまたはホランドパークに逃げ込
めばいいです。そこで、綺麗な景色を見ながら散歩するといいでしょう。
Holland Park has a Japanese style garden inside, interesting sculptures and a cafe. It was also
home to a festival of comedy this summer. The warm evenings meant that comedy could be
performed outside in the grounds of the park beside an old stately home. If living in Miyazaki
taught me anything, it was to appreciate a warm summer evening and take full advantage of it,
and there are so many free things to do during the summer here, you could easily spend an
evening just considering your choices.

ホランドパークには日本庭園、面白い彫像やカフェがあります。今年の夏にはコメディーの上演
場所にもなりました。夕方は暖かいので、コメディーを園の中の風格ある建物の側で、上演する
ことができます。宮崎に住んで学んだことと言えば、暖かい夏が好きになって、そして最大限に
楽しむ方法です。こちらでは、夏に自由にできることが多いので、何をするかちょっと考えるだ
けで夕方を過ごすことができるでしょう。
All public spaces are utilized for everyone’s enjoyment; Parks become open air cinema’s, theaters,
spaces for art, dance and festivals. Performers from many different cultures entertain in many
different ways and in one evening, the banks of the Thames can play host to a Korean Circus at
one end and a Czech folk band at the other.
すべての公共の場は誰もが楽しめるようになっています。公園は野外シネマ、劇場、美術のギャ
ラリー、そしてダンスやお祭りの場に変わります。それぞれの出演者はそれぞれの方法で人を楽
しませます。ある晩にはテムズ川沿いの一端でコリアンのサーカスがあって、もう一端ではチェ
コの民族楽隊が演奏をすることもあります。
As the long evenings of summer grow shorter and the leaves turn from green to gold, the climate
gets cooler but the British will still spend their evenings outside because October and November
bring Halloween and Guy Fawkes Night. No doubt you’re familiar with Halloween, but Guy Fawkes
is unique to the U.K. and is celebrated on the 5th of November, the anniversary of the eponymous
Guy’s thwarted attempt to blow up The Houses of Parliament. Guy Fawkes Night is celebrated with
fireworks and bonfires, and although it was strange (and a little uncomfortable) watching fireworks
on the antithesis of a hot Miyazaki night, the spectacle of seeing the London skylight alight with
tens of firework displays, miles apart, but so huge they could all be seen at once, was amazing.
長かった夏の夕方が短くなり、葉っぱも緑色から金色に変わります。天候が涼しくなっても、イ
ギリス人は外で夕方を過ごします。なぜならば、１０月にはハロウィーンがあって、１１月には
ガイ・フォークス・ナイトがあるからです。ハロウィーンは皆さんすでにご存知でしょうが、ガ
イ・フォークス・ナイトはイギリスの独特なお祭りです。それは、有名なガイ・フォークスが、
１７世紀の１１月５日に、国会議事堂を爆破しようとして、食い止められたことを記念します。
その日に、花火や焚き火でお祝いします。宮崎で暑い夏の夜に花火を見るのと正反対で、ちょっ
と馴染みがないですが（そして気持ち的にもなんか変な感じがします）、ロンドンの夜空に、盛
大な花火が、遠く離れたところで、一斉に打ち上げられますが、それが同時に見えるので不思議
だと思いました。
In Miyazaki I worked at Saito Commercial High School and at Takanabe Agricultural High School.
Saito and Takanabe are both places full of natural beauty, places that once they have entered
your heart will always make you long for the same tranquil splendor. Takanabe Agricultural High
School was also the school of Hiroshi Kuroki, governor of Miyazaki in 1959, when it came to the
well-being of Miyazaki he had some very commendable ideals. He believed that industrialization
shouldn’t come at the expense of the ecology and that progress should be measured by the
development of people and not just by economic indicators, but instead by their social and
personal well-being.
宮崎にいた時、私は西都商業高校や高鍋農業高校で勤務していました。西都と高鍋は、綺麗な自
然の景色が溢れ、一旦心に染み込んだら、いつもその穏やかな美しさを求めたくなります。高鍋
農業高校は、1959 年に宮崎県知事として当選された黒木博元知事の母校です。宮崎について、
黒木元知事はとても立派な理想を持っていました。黒木元知事は、産業化するために環境を犠牲
にすべきではないことを信じていました。そして「進歩」というのは、経済的指標ではなく、社
会的、個人的な幸福度で測るべきであると信じていました。

Hiroshi Kuroki said he wanted Miyazaki to be “a prefecture where man can make friends with wild
birds, where flowers bloom along the roads, where mountains are verdant with foliage, where
clean rivers and streams flow, where the sky is blue and free from smoke...”. And now I’ve been
fortunate enough to live in Miyazaki, I can see that we all want to attain something similar. The
sanctuary I seek out within London brings to mind Miyazaki, it’s peacefulness and it’s beauty.
黒木元知事は、宮崎を、人が野鳥とふれ合うことができ、道路沿いに花が咲き、山が緑に覆われ、
澄んでいる川が流れ、煙のない青空のある県としてイメージされていました。幸せなことに、私
は宮崎に住むことができましたが、黒木元知事の構想は、人間と自然が共存している理想の形で
はないかと思います。私がロンドンで探している精神の聖域は、宮崎のイメージと近いです。私
は、その穏やかさとその美しさを求め続けます。
