ガンチュワとパンタグリュエル物語」にて創造した、機略に富んだ人物に由来しています。
ユゴー、ゾラなども寄稿し、サラ ・ベルナールも取り上げられています。収録されている多数の挿絵は、
Adolphe Willete/Henri Detouche/Henri Somm/Henri Dillon などが手掛けています。
本誌に関わっている芸術家の多くは、パリ最古のキャバレー「シャ・ノワール（黒猫）」に集った人々であり、
その特徴は、本誌の猥雑な編集姿勢、そして時折現れる外国人嫌いの論調、貴族や高級ブルジョワに対す

「エリア随筆」で
知られるイギリスの随筆家チャールズと姉のメアリーが、シェイクスピアの主な作品 20 篇を、副題にある
ように「少年少女達の為に」鑑賞の手引きとして、短い物語に書き直したものです。彼らはなるべくシェ
イクスピアの使った言葉をわかりやすく使い、それ以後生まれた新語を避けて、原典の文学的面白さを伝
えようと試みました。
作品それぞれに１枚ずつの銅版挿絵が収められ、十二折２巻本として８シリングで発売されました。出版
所は、無政府主義者ウィリアム ・ゴドウィンが経営していた書店でした。
初版でチャールズの名しか出ていないのは、心の病に陥っていた姉を世間の注意の元に置きたくないとい
う弟の配慮からでした。また姉の心を痛めさせまいという意図から、悲劇６篇をチャールズ自らが書き、
残りの喜劇１４篇を姉が執筆しました。少年少女の為に教訓的な言葉が加えられているほか、心理的説明
に優れている本書は今日まで版を重ね、チャールズ及びメアリーの共著による古典作品として読み継がれ

婦クリュシスと彼女をとりまく男女の歓楽に耽る生活や、王妃を愛人とする芸術家デメトリオス、巷に生
